about

Samuel Andreyev's seventh album Swollows, completed shortly before the artist turned eighteen, was originally released on 10 October 2000. This premier offering from the Torpor Vigil label (paired, on a single compact disc, with Andreyev's preceding song cycle Twelve) garnered the attention of Van Dyke Parks who declared it "a champion musical adventure”—a phrase that not only encapsulated the spirited nature of the album but succinctly forecast the ensuing two decades of Andreyev’s career (and no doubt beyond). Those who’ve come to know his work more recently through recordings and concerts of his compositions by international ensembles, or by way of his distinctive 2013 return to songwriting The Tubular West, will be intrigued to hear this vibrant cluster of tunes whose palindromic title now seems the hinge connecting Andreyev’s early self-contained musical explorations with the symphonic trajectory first evident in Swollows. For this 20th anniversary edition, Samuel himself has remixed each track from the original analogue tapes and then mastered them according to the highest digital standards. It is an honour, and great fun besides, to reintroduce this marvellous album which my little label had the privilege of springing on the world exactly twenty years ago today.
